One of the things I never realized before that event was how short a fire department response is but the wind down takes a long time.

Double and triple checking has to be done to make sure the fire is really out, assess the damage and if people can come back in when the smoke is cleared (with the help of industrial sized fans placed in all entrances)

In the meantime, all that gear has to be taken care of, water pressure relieved from the pumps, items stored back in their compartments...
