Having obtained my first Macro lens (Nikkor 105mm f2.8 VR II), I decided to take it for a first worthy test run.

The location is the small but beautiful Wings of Paradise butterfly conservatory in Cambridge, Ontario. My advice is to go during the weekdays when there are no school field trips and weekends can get crowded quickly in such a confined space.

Lighting was difficult since it was top/down sunlight or little ambient light and conditions were tropical (high humidity). A living forest - complete with native plants, flowers, birds and lots of butterflies...

High ISO values (up to 6400) had to be used since stopping down the lens (to F16) had to be done since the depth of field is incredibly narrow when shooting subjects as close as 13 inches away but also having to freeze the action (1/125 sec). It also helps to work with a ridiculously sharp lens and amazing camera (Nikon D700).

All shot handheld, these creatures proved to be both a challenge and a wonder as well. I had a lot of fun and i'm very happy with my first results.
